What Is Cold Brew Coffee?

What is cold brew?

Cold brew is a method of preparing coffee that decreases the naturally-occurring acidity (the bright, “bite” or tartness you may taste) and increases the smooth, rich flavours. It is a concentrate that is cut with water and served over ice. It’s cold, smooth, and delicious. Think of it as the dark chocolate of the chilled coffee world.

What’s the difference between iced coffee and cold brew?

Iced coffee is brewed hot, then chilled. It tends to be bright and more acidic. Cold brew is steeped in cold water for many hours, filtered, and served with milk. Cold brew tends to be rich and smooth.

Why should the brewing temperature make a difference?

All coffee beans contain chemical compounds that produce an acidic-tasting quality. That’s a good thing! Acidity makes up a big part of coffees’ flavour profile and we love it. Hot water draws out the acidic chemical compounds. Cold water does not.

Is cold brew better than iced coffee?

That’s all up to you. Cold brew is exciting because of its unusual brewing method and its smooth, often cocoa-y flavor profile but iced coffee is delicious too. Try both and decide which is your favourite. We won’t judge!

Can I brew it at home?

Of course! The best products we’ve found to brew cafe quality cold brew are the Toddy Cold Brewer (we use a bigger version here at Fox for our Cold Brews) or the Hario Cold Brew Pot. Both come with brewing instructions in the box. All you have to do is add coarsely ground coffee (like would go in a plunger/french press) and water, then put it in the fridge overnight (8-12hrs) to brew. In the morning (depending on the device) you’ll strain the coffee into the provided decanter or take out the filer and you’ll be left with undiluted cold brew concentrate. This concentrate then can be cut with your preference of milks or water.

What kind of coffee should I use to make cold brew?

If you like bright, tart coffees, a light or medium roast with naturally-occurring acidity will retain some of those qualities in the cold brew. Many people prefer dark roasts without much naturally-occurring acidity for the smoothest, richest possible cold brew. We usually recommend our Hunter Blend or Dusk Blend coffees, but you can ask one of our barista for a recommendations or experiment yourself to find your favourite.

Can I buy it in store?
