Indonesia Finca De Berman (Espresso)
Indonesia Finca De Berman (Espresso)
Meet Indonesia Finca de Berman. If you think Indonesian coffee means earthy and heavy, this one's about to change your mind.
Finca de Berman sits at 1600 metres in Pangalengan, West Java, named after the nearby village of Berman. It started as a small farm under Kawitan Coffee, working with local growers and the Department of Forestry to lift cultivation and processing standards across the area. It's since picked up recognition in the Indonesia Cup of Excellence for coffees that are clean, complex and nothing like the Java stereotype.
The farm's whole approach is experimentation. Washed, honey, natural, fermentations most producers wouldn't bother trying. This lot is their wash mosto process, and it's the cleanest Indonesian we've put through the machine.
Flavour notes
Cocoa. Honey. Roasted Hazelnut.
Washed mosto process on Lini S795 and Ateng Super, which brings clarity and balance to a cup that still has plenty of sweetness and body for the machine.
You've got questions, we've got answers.
Is this only for espresso?
Yes. This one's roasted specifically for the machine, so you get a shot that's smooth and sweet rather than thin or sharp. If you're after filter, it's not this bag.
What's wash mosto?
Mosto is the juice and pulp left over from the fruit of the coffee cherry. In a wash mosto process, the coffee ferments in that juice before being washed, which borrows some of the sweetness and body of a natural while keeping the cleanliness of a washed coffee. It's why this one lands on honey and cocoa rather than anything funky.
Isn't Indonesian coffee usually earthy?
A lot of it is, and that comes down to how it's traditionally processed rather than where it's grown. Finca de Berman does things differently. Careful fermentation and proper washing mean the cup is clean, sweet and refined. If you've been let down by Indonesian coffee before, this is the one to try.
Will it work with milk?
Brilliantly. Cocoa, honey and roasted hazelnut is a flat white's natural habitat. It's sweet enough to cut through milk and smooth enough to drink black.
What are Lini S795 and Ateng Super?
Both are varieties widely grown in Indonesia for their resilience at altitude. Lini S795 in particular is known for a sweet, nutty cup, which is exactly what shows up here.
How does it taste?
Cocoa up front, a honey sweetness through the middle, and a roasted hazelnut finish that lingers. Smooth, balanced and an easy daily drinker with a bit more interest than your average Brazilian.
